How to Use Dual Camera on iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max

🗓️ September 19, 2025, By ✍️ Karly Wood

I’ve been using iPhone models for the past five years, and honestly, one of the biggest limitations for content creators like me was not being able to record with both cameras at the same time.

Sure, there were third-party apps out there that could do it, but they were clunky, drained the battery like crazy, and the video quality was never as good as the native camera app.

But with the new iPhone 17 series, including the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the iPhone Air, also. Apple finally built Dual Capture mode right into the stock Camera app — and it changes everything.

What does Dual Capture Mode do?

Dual Capture lets you record using both the front and rear cameras at the same time.
Your main camera captures what’s in front of you while the selfie camera records your reaction — and the best part is:

  • It saves both views together in a single video file.
  • There’s no need to edit or sync clips later.
  • It feels native, fast, and clean — just like normal video mode.

For creators, vloggers, or even casual users who want to capture a moment and their reaction at once, this is a huge win.

How to Enable Dual Capture on iPhone 17

Here’s how to try it out:

  1. Open the Camera app on your iPhone 17.
  2. Swipe to Video mode at the bottom.
  3. Tap the camera tools gear icon in the top-right corner.
  4. On the bottom tools tap “Dual Capture.”
  5. You’ll now see both your front and rear camera views on screen.

Watch this quick demo showing how Dual Capture works on the iPhone 17 Pro:

You can drag the selfie view around, resize it, and it stays locked on you while the rear camera focuses on the main scene.

When you’re ready, tap the red shutter button to start recording — and that’s it.
When you stop, the video is saved as a single file in your Photos app, ready to edit or share immediately.

Why This Feature Matters?

Having used iPhones for years, I can say this is a long overdue feature.
Phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra had similar dual camera recording modes, but they saved two separate videos, which meant extra editing every time.

With the iPhone 17’s Dual Capture, it’s seamless, fast, and reliable — and it feels like a true pro-level feature baked into iOS now.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve ever wished you could film yourself and your surroundings at the same time, Dual Capture on the iPhone 17 series is a total game changer.

After years of waiting, Apple finally gave us this tool — and it’s easily one of the best new camera features this year.
