How to Recover Accidentally Deleted Startup Disk on M1 Mac, MacBook
Mac Startup Disk not showing? Ensure you follow the correct procedure to open the Startup disk, as it differs for M1 Macs and Intel-based Macs. Here’s how to open Recovery Mode on Mac, MacBook [Apple’s Silicon M1-series, M1 Pro (MacBook Pro), M1 Max (MacBook Pro & Mac Studio), M1 Ultra (Mac Studio), M2 chip of 2022 (MacBook Pro & MacBook Air), or Intel chip Mac computer].
Method 1: Use Recovery Mode Option
On M1 Apple Silicon Mac:
- Shut down the Mac completely; to do so, click on the Apple menu and select Shut Down.
- Power On the Mac, press and hold the Power button until Startup Options appears on the screen.
- Click on Options and then click Continue.

- Select Disk Utility.

On Intel Mac:
- Restart the Mac, click on the Apple menu, and select Restart.
- Immediately, press and hold the Command + R.
- When the Apple logo, Spinning Globe, or Startup screen appears, release the Command + R.
- If asked, enter the Mac Password, and then you should see the Disk Utilities screen.
- Select Disk Utility.
Once you’re up to that, select the Internal Hard Drive from the left pane. Click on the Partition tab in the Disk Utility. From the Partition Layout, select 1 Partition.

Keep note that the Format is shown in Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).

Select Apply and repartition the drive.
Let the process complete, and if it completes without any error, close the Disk Utility.
An additional step you must follow if you have a backup on the Time Machine External Drive. Connect and restore your Mac Data to a Newly created Partition. Method 2: Restore Backup from Time Machine Drive
Another alternative to bring back the accidentally erased hard drive disk utility is by Restoring Backup from Time Machine. If you keep a backup on Time Machine, then it’s time to use that backup to get the deleted files back.
In M1 Apple Silicon Mac:
- Shut down the Mac. Click on the Apple menu > Shut Down.
- Now press and hold the Power button until Startup Options displays.
- Click on Options and then click Continue.

- Enter the password if asked.
- Select Restore From Time Machine Backup.

- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Now, Your Erased or lost Mac data is successfully reloaded from the old backup, with Apps, Games, Files, Folders, and settings as well.
On Intel Mac: [Follow for steps below for Intel Mac users]
- Restart the Mac.
- Press the Command + R until the startup screen or Apple logo or globe appears on the screen.
- Select Disk Utility.
- Click on Restore From Time Machine Backup.
From now onwards, the steps remain the same to restore the Time Machine backup on Mac.
- When Restore From Time Machine Backup screen shows up, click Continue.
- Select the hard drive from the list of drives from where you want to restore the backup.
- If you’re restoring from USB Drive or Hard Drive, make sure it is connected to the Mac, or else choose Wireless Network if you’ve stored the backup there.
- Now find the backup that you want to restore.
